Lead and water quality questions

  • Has the service line material been identified from the curb stop to the home?
  • Is there a local utility inventory or replacement program for lead service lines?
  • Will any old galvanized pipe remain downstream of newer copper or PEX?
  • Is water testing recommended before or after work?
  • Will the system be flushed before normal use?
  • Are filters, softeners, or treatment systems affected by the new layout?

Red flags to slow down

  • The quote does not say which lines are included.
  • Finished-wall repair is assumed but not written.
  • The plumber will not discuss permits or inspection.
  • Lead service line questions are ignored in an older home.
  • The material warranty is presented without explaining labor coverage.
  • The quote requires major access work but does not show where openings are likely.
